Gary Lineker has changed his stance on the next England manager

Gary Lineker has had a change of heart about who the FA should pick as England's next coach after Gareth Southgate steps down. Southgate, who's been leading the team since 2016, took England to two World Cups and the delayed Euro 2020, where the team got so close but were beaten on penalties by Italy in the final.

Now, the FA is thinking about trying to get Pep Guardiola as the new coach. This would be a big move because it's been a while since England had a foreign coach.

On The Rest is Football podcast Lineker said: "There is not exactly a plethora of hugely successful and talented English coaches. I have changed my mind, I used to think it didn't matter if they were English, when we didn't have obvious candidates. For a country like England, and it is our national sport, it should be an English coach."

"Brazil have never had a non-Brazilian manager, Germany haven't gone for a foreign manager, neither have France, Spain, Italy. It is probably unimaginable for them. I would be very surprised if Pep took it. Eddie Howe is probably the obvious one but I think he is in line for the Saudi Arabia job."

"I think overall Gareth has done a fantastic job with England but he has got terrific talent," he said. "I think the one criticism you can level at him is his substitutions. He has never really turned a game or made things massively different with his changes.

"He has made England a competitive side in major tournaments. People say flamboyant football doesn't win tournaments but being pragmatic often does. He is very safe."

Southgate and England are very likely to be in the tournament in Germany next year, even though they had a tough time and only managed a 1-1 draw against Ukraine in Poland. Right now, they're leading their qualifying group with 13 points after playing five games.
